Hōkūliʻa Residence
Set within the dramatic lava landscapes and sweeping ocean views of Hōkūlia, this mature garden demonstrates how exceptional landscapes gain richness through thoughtful stewardship over time. More than twenty years after its original installation, the property continues to express the strength of its original design through carefully maintained stonework, layered plantings, and a landscape that feels deeply rooted in place. Hawaiʻi Land & Garden Works was honored to serve not as the landscape designer, but as a steward of this remarkable property—providing maintenance guidance, horticultural direction, and restoration expertise to ensure that every intervention reinforced, rather than altered, the original designer's vision. Through careful observation and a deep understanding of the landscape's intent, we helped preserve the character, proportions, and spirit that have made these gardens enduringly beautiful.
This project reflects a core philosophy of Hawaiʻi Land & Garden Works: that great landscapes deserve knowledgeable stewardship long after construction is complete. Our work extends beyond creating new landscapes—we also help clients protect significant existing gardens by developing maintenance strategies that honor their history while responding to the realities of growth, aging materials, and changing environmental conditions. Whether guiding estate staff, refining planting compositions, or restoring key landscape features, our role is to ensure that exceptional landscapes continue to mature with grace and authenticity. At Hōkūlia, our contribution was not to redesign, but to safeguard the original artistic vision so that the landscape remains as compelling today as it was when it was first imagined.
